Using ICT is an important part of literacy. In the workplace you are more likely to write a report using a word processing package or deliver a presentation using PowerPoint than ever to do anything by hand.
The type of writing pupils do will determine the choice of software. Word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) is powerful but is not the best choice for all. The tables below help show which is the best software to use for each type of writing – and the strengths of that software.
The tables below give some ideas about when to use each of the different types of software. We use Microsoft products in school but of course there are other versions available (e.g. Pages on the Mac or free versions such as Google Drive or Open Office).
